Tortuga Island, Costa Rica
7/10
"Beautiful, Burnt and Pricey!"
With a 5 a.m. start, we boarded a bus from San José to the west coast, chasing a boat ride out to the famous Tortuga Island. The journey alone was worth it—lush landscapes rolling by before the sun fully woke up.
Once we arrived, the temperature shift was immediate, going from chilly to scorching in minutes. One of the highlights was the snorkeling just offshore, where vibrant coral reefs were home to schools of colorful fish, adding an unexpected layer of adventure to the day.
Tortuga Island itself is small and packed with people, which takes away from the secluded-island feel. That said, a cold drink in hand made it easier to relax. Just be warned—if food, drinks, or extras aren’t included in your tour, prices for souvenirs and beverages add up quickly.
Overall, it’s a beautiful experience, especially for the scenery and snorkeling, as long as you go in with the right expectations.

"Adventurous yet Mysterious!"
Halfway between San José and Liberia sits Monteverde, a mountaintop region where peaks rise above the clouds and the world feels entirely different. Cool air, misty forests, and endless green set the tone the moment you arrive.
One of the highlights is the network of suspension bridges that carry you high above the canopy. Eight bridges stretch across a two-mile hike, placing you eye-level with drifting clouds and the forest below—easily worth the visit on its own.
If you’re willing to spend a little extra, the sloth sanctuary is a perfect addition. It’s a relaxed, educational experience that rounds out the day and adds a memorable wildlife encounter to an already incredible setting.
Monteverde is slow, scenic, and immersive—a must-stop for anyone exploring Costa Rica.
I won't lie, getting here if driving yourself is quite difficult!
